Agricultural methane emissions, on the other hand, are largely generated from biological decomposition, livestock digestion, anaerobic decomposition of agricultural wastes and anaerobic activity in irrigated rice cultivation.

These include biodigester septic tanks for treatment of domestic sewage anaerobic pond systems for treating agricultural processing wastes and anaerobic sludge reactors for the treatment of food processing waste water.

In response to questions about the anaerobic degradation of appliances in landfills, Mr. Ashford said that research was only in its early stages and that it was important to establish the nature of the degradation products before looking at what could be done to look at enhancing the process of anaerobic degradation.

Anaerobic bacteria (organisms that do not require air for growth) decompose the oils contained in whale bones and emit sulphides and other compounds.

Among the low cost waste water treatment options available are anaerobic treatment systems, which have the advantage of simple construction and low cost maintenance.

Then we would have an anaerobic digester, which could deal with all the biodegradable waste from the local area, turn that into heat for the greenhouse and electricity to feed back into the grid.

(i) For new landfills, to provide regulations to enforce new anaerobic landfills to be equipped with methane recovery for use as energy (or flaring, if energy use is not feasible) where economically and environmentally feasible

Other measures mentioned were the changing of landfill processes from anaerobic to semi aerobic collecting, sorting and processing of waste, introduction of modern biotechnologies of waste processing, and strengthening of control and reduction in the amount of organic substances stored in landfill sites.

Lastly, the task force had noted that in many countries, 60 per cent of the refrigerators produced using CFC 11 blowing agents had already gone into landfills and that issues related to the attenuation of landfill emissions through anaerobic degradation of CFC 11 deserved further attention.

If we feed our food waste which is the current government favorite way of getting rid of food waste, to anaerobic digestion, which turns food waste into gas to produce electricity, you save a paltry 448 kilograms of carbon dioxide per ton of food waste. It's much better to feed it to pigs.

(d) Guidance provision of guidance on various waste management options and best practice (for example, obtainment of compost or anaerobic digestion of organic waste, installation of whole site landfill gas collection, followed by its utilization (or flaring, where applicable) at new sites receiving biodegradable waste, and at existing sites, if remaining capacity and gas production is likely)
