The relative absence of mismatch was one of the reasons why emerging markets did much better when their currencies depreciated in 2008 2009 than in past crises. Exceptions like Hungary, where homeowners had foolishly borrowed in seemingly cheap euros and Swiss francs, proved the rule.

Because crude oil is priced in US dollars, and the dollar has depreciated against the euro, European consumers have gotten off relatively easy from rising energy prices. So an energy tax roughly equal to the euro s 33 appreciation in recent years would be about right.

First, in one or several dimensions, some part of the economy s base of tangible, intangible, and natural resource assets is being run down. I would include social cohesion as part of the asset base it is the one that is depreciated by excessive inequality.

Indeed, in 2004 the United States dollar further depreciated against the euro and the appropriations for 2004, calculated in dollars on the basis of the exchange rate in March 2003 (dollar euro ratio of 0.929), were not sufficient to meet the expenditure in euros.

Before the introduction of the euro, the reform gap between Germany and its larger neighbors would have been no problem for Europe. The currencies of the reform laggards would have depreciated against that of Germany, and there might have been a supportive cut in interest rates as well.

This high handed attempt to highjack the ECB and make it a servant of the European Parliament would mean chronically low European interest rates and a depreciated euro. France would be off the reform hook, of course, but at the expense of Germany, which would face unwanted inflationary pressures.

In early 1985, when the US current account deficit reached 120 billion, about a third of today's level at current prices, the rest of the world stopped financing it. The outcome was a sudden fall in the value of the dollar, which depreciated by 50 against the Deutschemark.

Capital assets reflected in the financial statements of 31 December 1997 consist of office buildings and staff housing presented at their acquisition cost of 11,967,000, as well as greeting card and related operations machinery and equipment that are depreciated over the estimated useful life of these assets.

With the fiscal deficit being financed through money creation, inflation is high and the hryvnia, Ukraine s currency, has depreciated (though nowhere near as much as the Russian ruble). An external aid package that is large enough to restore confidence and assuage financing doubts is a precondition for successful structural reform.

But there is a more fundamental point From an economic viewpoint, currency manipulation or unfair undervaluation are exceedingly hard to pin down conceptually. The renminbi's slight depreciation against the dollar in 2014 is not evidence of it many other currencies, most notably the yen and the euro, depreciated by far more last year.

The euro, too, has depreciated significantly against the dollar over the last year, and some US trade critics want provisions to prevent currency manipulation added to the TTIP. But the European Central Bank has not intervened in the foreign exchange market since 2000 and that was to support the euro, not weaken it.

In recent years, assets in emerging market economies especially currencies have depreciated by 5 50 relative to the dollar, reflecting both external imbalances and the broader macro conditions of individual countries. There is a widespread view that most emerging financial markets have already priced in the effects of a gradual increase in interest rates.

First, the facts Since hitting its high watermark on January 14, 2014, the renminbi has depreciated by 3.4 relative to the US dollar through April 25. This follows a cumulative appreciation of 37 since July 21, 2005, when China dropped its dollar peg and shifted its currency regime to a so called managed float.
