20. In any event, this case demonstrates the importance of monitoring implementation of the diethylene glycol measures called for by WHO (see Alert No. 13 of 26 September 1990 and No. 31 of 22 December 1992).

First came a spate of stories about pet food laced with melamine (a coal derivative), cough medicine and toothpaste adulterated with diethylene glycol (a sweet tasting industrial chemical used in anti freeze and brake fluid), toy trains decorated with lead based paints, bacteria infected antibiotics, exploding cell phone batteries, and defective car tires.

In 2007, melamine was deliberately added to an ingredient in pet food to enhance artificially its protein levels, causing renal failure in hundreds of cats and dogs in North America, Europe, and Africa. Later that year, diethylene glycol was mislabeled as non toxic glycerin, then mixed into cold medicine, killing at least 100 people in Panama, including many children.
