The expenditure of 49,500 relates to the purchase of accommodation equipment, office furniture and communications equipment that were erroneously recorded under this line item.

Different groups of assets, such as communications equipment, vehicles, electronic data processing equipment etcetera, depreciate at different rates based on the average useful life of the item.

The maintenance of port infrastructure and equipment remains an important item in future action by Governments.

88. Transport of contingent owned equipment. There were no requirements for the transport of contingent owned equipment during this period and, therefore, no expenditures were incurred under this line item.

This system will provide specific information on each individual item of United Nations owned equipment such as the item apos s maintenance history, repair parts and labour consumed by the item and the item apos s required maintenance schedule.

Contracts entered into, item of equipment purchased and personnel recruited will all bear a close relationship to the Completion Strategy.

The working group noted that coverage of existing systems and equipment was included under the line item, market data service.

The field missions will need the cooperation of the military contingents to identify the expected remaining life of each item of major equipment before that equipment can be scheduled for replacement under the new procedures.

This module contains the description and the unique identification (item number) of each line of equipment and supply held in field missions.

Additional requirements totalled, therefore, 6,800, owing to the prior period adjustment. 64. Water purification equipment. The availability of equipment spare parts from surplus UNPF stock resulted in unutilized requirements of 5,800 under this line item.

6. Port facilities and services The maintenance of port infrastructure and equipment remains an important item in governments apos future action.

Requirements of 12,900 were attributable to purchases of miscellaneous electrical equipment and the cost of one sea container charged to this budget line item.

For ease of classification, these assets have been grouped into 12 categories of equipment presented in standard peacekeeping operation budgets prefabricated buildings, communications equipment, office equipment, electronic data processing equipment, generators, petrol tank plus metering equipment, water and septic tanks, accommodation equipment, refrigeration equipment, miscellaneous equipment, field defence equipment and water purification equipment.

(d) Confirm that in claims involving losses due to hostile action or forced abandonment, the basis for reimbursement for an item of equipment will be the lesser of the generic fair market value or the residual value of the equipment lost

The budgetary provision under this line item provided for the purchase of five night vision scopes and two tripod mounted binoculars to facilitate teams of military observers on border monitoring duties. Since contingents provided this equipment as self sustainment, which was reported under contingent owned equipment, no expenditure was incurred under this line item.

The introduction of surveillance technology stemming from the amended concept of military operations would require additional resource provisions under the special equipment budget line item.

59. Stationery and office supplies. Provision of 48,000 was made under this line item. Total requirements amounted to 84,300 and included the purchase of data processing supplies in support of the upgrading of computer equipment in the Mission and eight laptop computers. The cost of the laptop computers ( 22,300) was erroneously charged to this line item instead of to data processing equipment.

Provision is made for miscellaneous equipment, such as air conditioners, photographic equipment, engineering equipment, fire fighting equipment, replacement tools and other equipment ( 68,000, inclusive of freight costs).

40. Rental of vehicles. The estimate provided for the rental of specialized equipment for short periods of time for general handling of cargo, materials and supplies and engineering works, including roadworks. Since the engineering battalion provided this equipment under a wet lease arrangement for reimbursement of contingent owned equipment, no expenditures were incurred under this line item.

(b) Purchasing of computer equipment, vehicles, and medical equipment

The amount of 10,000 provides for the replacement of audio equipment, lighting equipment, batteries, other equipment and accessories.

46. Data processing equipment. The budget provided an amount of 34,300 under this line item. The additional requirements of 171,000 related to expenditures on equipment for the field assets control system, which was installed during the reporting period, and to the upgrading of obsolete computer equipment. The expenditures also include an amount of 26,900 from the prior mandate period.

For technical repair of office equipment, machinery, communications and engineering equipment.

An amount of 14,300 has been included for spare parts, repair and maintenance of United Nations owned equipment, including office equipment, data processing equipment, generators and water purification equipment.

(i) The Phase III Working Group recommended that the United Nations should be responsible for compensating troop contributing countries for loss of or damage to major equipment due to hostile action or forced abandonment in respect of each and every item of major equipment valued at 250,000 and above, as well as of major equipment whose collective value equals or exceeds 250,000.

The reported reduced requirements were attributable to the implementation of the wet lease and self sustainment arrangements for contingent owned communications equipment, as well as to the inclusion of some charges for spare parts under the communications equipment budget line item (see para. 46 above).

Purchase of equipment

20. With regard to the proposed requirements of 312,000 for spare parts, repairs and maintenance under budget line item 9, Other equipment, the Secretariat clarified, upon enquiry, that this provision includes 57,900 for the ongoing maintenance of UNPREDEP equipment, as well as 254,100 for the refurbishment of equipment that is to be sent to the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi.

Expenditures totalling 73,400 were incurred under this line item for the purchase of various workshop equipment required to repair refurbish vehicles held in the United Nations reserve stock.
