At its seventeenth session in July 1997, the Committee again designated Ms. Silvia Cartwright to act as the resource person.9

The first Panamanian women to participate, Carlota Gooden, Yean Holness, Lorraine Dunn and Silvia Hunten, competed in the athletics events at the Rome Games in 1960.

In August 2004, Brazil elected Dr. Silvia Pimentel, a renowned jurist and feminist, as one of the experts to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

The participation and keynote address by Dame Silvia Cartwright, Governor General of New Zealand and a former member of the Committee, had made the event a truly memorable one.

Brad Delong and Larry Summers have argued that in a repressed economy, short term increases in borrowing can pay for themselves, even if the expenditures do not directly increase long run potential. By contrast, Alberto Alesina and Silvia Ardagna argue that in an economy with a large and inefficient government, debt stabilization measures directed at reducing the size of government can actually be expansionary.

According to some contemporary observers, however, pent up demand was only part of the story. During the brief but deep recession of 1949, the financial commentator Silvia Porter reflected on the attitudes that led to the 1929 crash We saw nothing wrong in fact, we saw everything right with the wild speculative boom and credit inflation that culminated in the now almost unbelievable gambling orgy of 1929.

409. At its 392nd meeting on 30 June 1998, Ms. Silvia Cartwright, the resource person appointed by the Committee to attend the open ended working group on the elaboration of a draft optional protocol to the Convention reported that significant progress had been made by the working group when it met during the forty second session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March 1998.

At its seventeenth session, the Committee decided that its contribution to the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights should include a written statement on reservations, particularly in the context of article 2 of the Convention. Ms. Silvia Cartwright was designated by the Committee to submit a first draft of a statement relating to reservations. At its eighteenth session, the Committee will have before it a draft working paper on reservations.

31. In adopting the report of the Commission on the Status of Women on its fortieth session, the Economic and Social Council decided, inter alia, that a representative of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women should be invited to attend the next session of the Open ended Working Group as a resource person.7 At its sixteenth session, the Committee designated Ms. Silvia Cartwright as its representative to the Working Group.8
