We roll 120 foot Spartan, i.e. our vision, up to our clients' gates of Troy.

The measurements made by SPARTAN 201 will be used in conjunction with those from the Ulysses spacecraft, which was launched in October 1990 and which detected the solar wind from the south polar corona as SPARTAN observed the source region of that wind as well as other portions of the Sun apos s corona.

Data from SPARTAN 201 will also calibrate measurements to be made by the European Space Agency (ESA) NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, scheduled for launch in 1995.

SPARTAN 201 2, a small satellite deployed and then retrieved several days later by the Space Shuttle Discovery in September 1994, examined the Sun apos s hot outer atmosphere, or extended corona, and the solar wind, the flow of charged ions from the Sun.

On its second of four planned missions aboard the Shuttle, SPARTAN contained two instruments the NASA designed White Light Coronograph to measure the density and distribution of the electrons in the coronal holes and polar plumes of the Sun and the Ultraviolet Coronal Spectrometer, designed by the SAO.
