In Nablus, IDF evacuated about one dozen yeshiva students from Joseph s Tomb as a precautionary measure after the Palestinian police had suspended joint patrols with IDF and stopped coordinating entrance into the yeshiva. (Ha aretz, Jerusalem Post, 12 March)

The demonstration turned violent when protesters charged towards the yeshiva enclave and tore down one of the shacks.

75. On 18 January, three Palestinians and a yeshiva student were injured in Jerusalem during a fistfight near the Damascus Gate.

The fight apparently broke out when the Palestinians blocked the path of a group of yeshiva students. (Jerusalem Post, 19 January)

87. On 5 February, a 27 year old yeshiva student was stabbed inside the Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem.

119. On 19 November, two students from the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva in Jerusalem s Old City were ambushed while returning to their dormitories.

261. On 6 May, students from the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva pitched a tent in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem and moved to a house the yeshiva owned outside the Lions Gate in response to the killing of a fellow student earlier in the day. (Ha aretz, Jerusalem Post, 7 May)

On the Mount of Olives, busloads of revellers came to the Beit Orot Yeshiva to join the Mayor of Jerusalem and Members of the Knesset.

82. On 31 January, a 15 year old yeshiva student from Jerusalem was stabbed in the back by an Arab woman while walking to the Western Wall.

This was the fifth stabbing to have occurred in a month in the area of the religious school (yeshiva) in the Jewish Orthodox quarter of Mea Shearim.

262. On 7 May, the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva students scuffled with Waqf officials over the ownership of a house they occupied in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Under heavy police guard, the yeshiva students continued to renovate the occupied building as fellow students pitched tents on land they claimed was theirs in the Muslim Quarter.

Mr. Netanyahu s directives followed the stabbing to death of a yeshiva student on his way to sunrise services at the Western Wall on 6 May. (Jerusalem Post, 14 May)

Jerusalem District Police Commander Yair Yitzhaki stated that records proved that the yeshiva had purchased the house legally and therefore there was no reason to evict the new tenants.

In another incident, a yeshiva student was slightly injured when a Palestinian youth attacked him with a utility knife near the Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem.

135. On 6 May, a 28 year old yeshiva student was stabbed to death on his way to morning prayers at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem.

262. On 23 September, some 200 Palestinian high school students staged a demonstration in the Ras al Amud area, calling for the yeshiva students who had moved into the neighbourhood to leave.

The Government is said to have been pledging additional security in the Old City for some time, especially following the murder of a yeshiva student there on 20 November. (Jerusalem Post, 28 January)

Police stated that it was the fifth stabbing in the same neighbourhood in six months and was apparently in revenge for the stabbing to death of a yeshiva student a day before. (Ha aretz, Jerusalem Post, 8 May)

In a related incident, Palestinian youths threw stones at police shielding dozens of Temple Mount Faithful activists who were marching to the Christian Quarter, where a yeshiva student had been shot dead in November. (Ha aretz, 31 December)

The incident followed a promise made by the head of Ateret Cohanim in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that houses owned by the yeshiva would be renovated for new tenants within a year. (Jerusalem Post, 24 November)

It was also reported that after an attack in the vicinity of Beit Hadassah on 2 May 1980 in which six yeshiva students had been killed, the security forces had demolished the family s three one storey buildings, which contained 15 stores.

147. On 28 May, it was reported that GSS, with the help of the Jerusalem Police Minority Division, had recently arrested an Arab woman from Samaria (West Bank) suspected of stabbing a 15 year old yeshiva student outside Damascus Gate on 31 January.

56. On 23 November, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared that Israel s response to an incident on 19 November in which a 26 year old yeshiva student had been shot dead in the Old City of Jerusalem would be to increase the Jewish presence there.

A building near the Lions Gate owned by the yeshiva was cleaned up by students in anticipation of Jewish families moving in and the police had had to use force in order to keep 20 Arabs from trying to force their way in.

268. On 26 May, 15 Palestinian Legislative Council members interrupted their morning meeting in Ramallah and rushed to the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem to protest against 10 tin shacks that had been erected there overnight by members of the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva.

258. On 18 September, under a compromise agreement, the three Jewish families who had moved into a building in Ras al Amud voluntarily left the houses they had occupied, but were to be replaced by 10 yeshiva students and an additional 10 security and maintenance men the following day.

They were suspected of being involved in two suicide attacks in Jerusalem in 1997 that had killed 22 people and injured 345, as well as in five shooting attacks in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) between November 1995 and May 1997, one of which had resulted in the death of a yeshiva student.

257. On 17 September, the Jewish settlers who had taken over two houses in the Ras al Amud quarter of East Jerusalem and Palestinians both refused the compromise whereby the settlers would evacuate the houses and be replaced by yeshiva students who would look after the buildings. (The Jerusalem Times, 19 September)

334. On 23 November, the administration and students of the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva in the Old City of Jerusalem moved to strengthen their presence in the Old City, in a direct response to a terrorist attack a week earlier in which one of its students had been shot dead and another seriously wounded.

Addressing some 150 students of the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva where the victim had studied, Mr. Netanyahu vowed that Israel would hold on to all of Jerusalem and make all the necessary efforts to that effect. We intend to continue with other things that will allow us to enforce our sovereignty over all parts of Jerusalem and to facilitate the settlement of Jews everywhere , he declared. 307. On 19 September, Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert expressed his conviction that a Jewish enclave would eventually be created in the Arab neighbourhood of Ras al Amud in East Jerusalem. It is an irreversible process , Mr. Olmert told army radio following the eviction of three settler families from a building in the neighbourhood and their replacement by 10 yeshiva students and 10 security and maintenance men.
