34. Annex IV to the present report gives the vacancy rates for civilian personnel during the period ending 30 June 1997 by mission as compared with rates forecast in the initial budget.

Though the current vacancy rate stands at only about 4 per cent, the Committee was informed that it was not the rate so much as the nature of the vacancies that was causing difficulties.

In 2003, a total of 41,173 women competed to fill vacancies, and they accounted for 56.8 of the total number of applicants.
