Wasting Food in a Hungry World

Some aid may have built a hospital, fed a hungry village.

Nor would there be billions of illiterate people or 900 million starving human beings in the world.

With hunger, famine and starvation prevalent in all corners of the world, notably in Africa, the United Nations task is simply enormous.

Hunger definitely means something a little bit different in America than it does internationally, but it's incredibly important to address hunger in our own country.

As emphasized by the World Food Summit, although the provision of free relief goods is often needed to address the threat of immediate starvation, such relief distributions should be approached with greater caution.

Five years later, the world is still faced with the challenges of poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy.

Poverty, hunger and disease continue to afflict a vast proportion of women and men around the world.

As the world's food markets became completely free, hunger would disappear.

Recalling further the Universal Declaration on the Eradication of Hunger and Malnutrition as well as the United Nations Millennium Declaration,

What matters is the fact that, even in this century, there are children dying from starvation in many parts of the world.

And this zero hunger program costs .5 percent of GDP and has lifted many millions of people out of hunger and poverty.

It must lead the people to their homeland and provide the bread to calm the hunger of the wretched of the world.

Nevertheless, world trends showed that the efforts of Governments and the international community were insufficient to stem the spread of hunger in the world.

In 2003, in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum, the Brazilian Government proposed the creation of an international fund to combat hunger and poverty.

Because there is no shortage of food worldwide, combating hunger implies providing people with the means of acquiring food.

Hunger denies its victims the use of opportunities to move out of poverty and traps them in a vicious cycle of hunger poverty hunger.

Extreme poverty and hunger are the disgrace of our century.
