Pay attention to personal hygiene and frequently wash hands

The Health Bureau appeals to citizens for avoiding being exposed to birds and pay attention to personal and food hygiene.

In view of women's role in household sanitation and hygiene, awareness raising campaigns can be effective when targeted to this audience, mobilizing women to spread the sanitation and hygiene message.

(viii) To promote community health and individual health care by conducting health education programmes through the mass media

In this case, public health education and hygiene awareness raising, including through mass media, could create demand for sanitation services.

Based on the review by the World Health Organization (WHO) of overall health trends in the past 50 years, remarkable improvements in health have been due to socio economic development, the wider provision of safe water, sanitation facilities and personal hygiene, and the establishment and expansion of national services.

UNICEF supported water, sanitation and hygiene promotion initiatives in schools in 76 countries in 2004, compared to 47 in 2002.

As a follow up to the commitment made by UNICEF at the World Summit for Social Development, support to schools in 76 countries included the inclusion of hygiene in curricula training of teachers in hygiene education construction of new water, sanitation and washing facilities and promoting hygiene behaviour changes in communities through students.

Fifty eight (58) of the settlements have a health post.

They are housed six or seven to a room, hygiene is poor, and there is considerable promiscuity.

Programmes that combine improved sanitation and hand washing facilities in schools with hygiene education can improve the health of children for life.

27. Universal access to safe water and sanitation would have a significant impact on reducing under five mortality, as WHO attributes about 3 million child deaths per year to Table 2 Child malnutrition (below five years of age)

The promotion of health education on both basic hygiene and sexual and reproductive health should not be limited solely to schools and formal health delivery systems.

Options are presented on access to basic water services integrated water resources management access to basic sanitation sanitation and hygiene education and wastewater collection, treatment and reuse.

One example is sanitation.

The proceedings and framework for action resulting from a round table on water, sanitation and hygiene education for schools, held in Oxford, England, in January 2005, set out actions that must be taken to ensure that by 2015 the end of the Water for Life Decade all schools receive a basic quality package of water, sanitation and hygiene education.

Substantial efforts are needed for the scaling up of locally planned interventions for poor families community based hygiene improvement and water safety and strengthened sector plans, policies and budgets for hygiene, sanitation and water supply.
