2. Notes that the effects on the budget of inflation and currency fluctuations can be both positive and negative

Mr. De Rato (International Monetary Fund) I am very pleased to be here, on behalf of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with so many distinguished leaders.

By my calculations, the dollar still needs to go down another 15 if the US trade deficit is to go back towards balance. Ideally, Asian currencies would rise much more than 15 while European currencies would rise less.

This has meant either a decline in asset prices quoted in dollars or in dollars quoted in other currencies. Indeed, adjusted for inflation, the dollar is now nearly as low against the euro as it was against the deutschmark in 1992, when German unification resulted in the breakdown of the European currency system.

In 2001 02, the GDP had grown from 433.6 million to 470.2 million, representing an annual economic growth rate of 8.4 per cent in money terms and 7.8 per cent in real terms after deducting inflation.
