Building materials A range of energy efficient, low waste and cleaner technologies are now available for the production of building materials including cement, bricks, blocks and roofing tiles.

If we look at construction and manufacturing, there's major inefficiencies, energy consumption and excessive labor techniques.

This is the Beddington Zero Energy Development in London, which is one of the greenest buildings in the world. It's a fabulous place.

And you can measure the performance, in terms of energy consumption, of that building against a typical library.

New building designs have slashed heating and cooling costs by relying much more on insulation, natural ventilation, and solar power. Advances in nanotechnology offer the prospect of lighter construction materials that require much less energy to produce, making both buildings and vehicles far more energy efficient.

Uses very, very little power.

Now when we look at being able to slash our product use, slash our transportation use, slash our building energy use, all of that is great, but it still leaves something behind.

These things actually become cheaper to build than the alternatives.

The more relaxed I am, the more the energy's going to fall through it.

They committed that they're going to take their existing stores and reduce their energy consumption by 20 percent, and their new stores by 30 percent, and do all that in seven years.

One country is supporting the introduction of techniques to alleviate the consumption of wood for heating and construction.

And at the end of the project we worked out that the weight of that superstructure was actually less than the weight of the air inside the building.

In a similar vein, regulations and standards for buildings generally are applied to new construction and much less frequently to renovations.

If we can lower the barriers to farming, building, manufacturing, then we can unleash just massive amounts of human potential.

And particularly, how can it lead to the creation of buildings which consume less energy, create less pollution and are more socially responsible?

But we've also got to get consumption down.

In some instances, energy consumption can be reduced by 50 80 per cent depending on the current level of use efficiency.
