Individual candidates from political parties or individuals in their own right are at liberty to contest any National Assembly elections.

Three members are elected from among candidates proposed by WHO and 10 are elected from among candidates proposed by Governments.

Following a review of the applications, the National Elections Commission approved 22 presidential candidates, 22 vice presidential candidates, 205 candidates for the Senate and 513 candidates for the House of Representatives.

Candidate of gender that is less represented is part of the lists of candidates in the following manner at least one candidate of less represented gender among the first two candidates, two candidates of less represented gender among the first five candidates, and three candidates of less represented gender among the first eight candidates, etc.

The candidate who polls the most votes is elected to the National Assembly.

86. The President of the Republic is elected by direct suffrage, the candidate who obtains more than half the votes being elected.

In post conflict countries, elections present challenges and opportunities for women as candidates and voters.

To be elected, every candidate must submit a candidate's file in accordance with article 29 of the Code and provide proof of his or her nationality.

Since the number of candidates corresponds to the number of seats to be filled in each region, I declare those candidates elected, in addition to the representatives of the five permanent members of the Security Council.

A candidature may be withdrawn at any stage by the candidate or by the nominating Government.

This Constitution re established universal suffrage for the election of the President of the Republic, deputies and their alternates.

The election will proceed on the basis of a list of persons nominated by national groups of States parties to the Statute of the International Court of Justice.

The Asian States in list A had submitted the candidature of Sri Lanka to replace Samoa, the States in list B had submitted the candidature of Norway to replace the United States of America and the States in list C had submitted the candidature of Costa Rica to replace Saint Lucia which was not present.

In most cases, only one candidate is put up for each vacant seat, and each candidate is selected by Member States through their regional groups.

The presidential election was contested by 18 candidates, including one woman.

In Herat, a woman candidate received the most votes out of 17 candidates.
