In economic terms, workers' remittances were systemically important, accounting for 1.3 per cent of developing countries' gross domestic product in 2002.

Cape Verde received 34 of its GDP from remittances, Eritrea 38 and Burundi 23 . In Asia, the figures were 30 for Afghanistan and 38 for Tajikistan, while in Europe Moldova received 31 of its GDP from external sources.

In 2002, remittances accounted for 1.3 of the GDP, 55.9 of foreign direct investment and 140 of aid flows in the developing world.

An intelligence officer therefore becomes a military information officer, intelligence summaries become military information summaries and so forth.

Recent additions include descriptions of the methodology to aggregate from basic headings to the GDP and of the ways in which the regions will be linked at the basic heading level.

For many low income countries, remittances as a share of GDP and imports are larger than in the case of middle income countries.

By late July 2004, foreign exchange reserves had risen to US 4.6 billion, external debt had been brought down to 68 per cent of GDP and inflation had been contained.

The deficit represented 23.5 per cent of GDP (compared to 18 per cent of GDP in 1996 and 15.7 per cent in 1995).

In any event, whether remittances are used for consumption or investments, they generate positive effects on the economy by stimulating GNP growth and allowing for further inflows of foreign currency.
