Now, that's just one story about oil, and we could end it there and say, Well, oil's going to last forever because, well, there's just a lot of it.

In the first period, most of the resource requirements concerned the acquisition of equipment, including prefabricated facilities, generators and fuel tanks and pumps.

It is also a non static concept, as estimates of reserves will generally be revised upwards or downwards as additional geologic or engineering data become available, as technology improves, and or as economic conditions (such as oil prices and production costs) change. In fact, the bulk of recent growth in world reserves is due not to new discoveries, but mainly to reserve growth and improved recovery rates.

In any case, arguments about the size of world oil reserves and when global production will peak misses the key security issue. The heart of the problem is not the overall quantity of oil, but its location.

A third argument is that if speculation were to blame for price increases, there should have been an increase in oil inventories, because speculators do not consume oil but instead store it for later sale. Since there has been no rise in inventories, there has been no speculation.
