(e) To secure reasonable consumer prices of agricultural goods.

The appropriate prices to be used for this purpose should be the local prices that would have been paid to the farmers if the lost crops had been produced.

The gap between prices for agricultural produce and for goods it consumes has widened to reach an inadmissible level.

Iran estimates the alleged reduction in crop quality by comparing crop prices in the Southern Provinces in 1991 with national crop prices.

3. Agricultural price policies

Minimum producer prices, which were eliminated for food crops (1996) and cash crops (1997), have been replaced by reference prices.

The crop prices used by Iran in calculating the value of lost crops are not appropriate for estimating the value of crops that were not, in fact, produced.

These may be either the best country prices or perhaps even international prices, but they are not local farm gate prices.

The next thing I believe is that we need to create technologies for poor farmers to add value to their own crops.

The local producer prices are the prices that are received by the farmers and do not include market and transportation costs.

A critical role of marketing boards has been to shelter SSA farmers from extreme price fluctuations.
