This year 2 billion was allocated to this sector, a drop of 17 per cent compared to 2.4 billion in 2003. The major regions that benefited from WFP delivery were the Arab States and Africa, with Arab States taking the bulk share of expenditure for the second consecutive year.

Six organizations in particular contributed to this increase with their contributions totalling accounted for 87 per cent ( 2.0 billion) of the overall share WHO ( 825.4 million), UNRWA ( 449.4 million), FAO ( 300.5 million), UNESCO ( 172.8 million), ILO (146.4 million) and the United Nations International Development Organization UNIDO ( 129.5 million).

The total budget for 2006 2007 is proposed to increase by 4.8 million, from 37.5 million to 42.3 million.

The bulk of the proposed increase of 19.7 million under operational costs relates to facilities and infrastructure ( 10.5 million), ground transportation ( 2.6 million), general temporary assistance ( 2.5 million), communications ( 1.9 million) and other supplies, services and equipment ( 1.2 million).

Three other sectors were the focus of UNICEF activities in 2004 general development issues, which received 322.5 million (up from 272 million in 2003), education, which received 181.8 million (up from 142 million in 2003), and the environment, which received 131.3 million (up from 110 million in 2003).

By category of activity, these expenditures were regional, 12.2 million in 2004, compared to 12.7 million in 2003 interregional, 28.1 million in 2004, compared to 23.2 million in 2003.
