Geographical, demographic and economic status

In 2002 the Alberta Public Health Act was amended to enhance the ability of the Government to declare a state of public health emergency and, respond once a public health emergency has been identified.

One such area is the availability of sanitary latrines for their comfort.

It is well recognized that health is significantly influenced by social and other non health factors.

In a report on the health of the population of the municipality of Vieques, dated 7 May 2004, the Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico had called the medical situation on the island an emergency .

On those occasions, the Agency monitored health conditions and camp sanitation, delivered safety and sanitation equipment and provided educational and recreational materials.

The situation in education, health, agriculture and environment was worsening in the occupied territories.

The Public Health Act, adopted in 2001 to deal with public health emergencies and threats, specifies the powers of public health officials to investigate and intervene.

12.8 Housing, sanitation, electricity, drinking water, transport and communications

The Public Health Agency focusses on public health issues of importance, ensures clear federal leadership in the case of a health emergency and provides coordinated, coherent response to public health issues domestically and internationally.

Thus, anyone shall have the right to effective recourse before national courts against acts which he or she alleges to be in violation of his or her fundamental rights under the Constitution and the applicable laws.
