The Post Crisis Crises

In a time of crisis who else could rally the people like Lonesome Rhodes?

That was until the 1970s, where we had the last energy crisis.

We hope that it will come, not in the wake of a crisis, but at the dawning of a more enlightened time.

The two missions of the Security Council and of the Economic and Social Council highlighted the complementarity of those organs when they address complex crises such as the one in Haiti.

It was a jumpy ride. 80,000 years back in a crisis, we leave Africa, we colonize Australia in another crisis, 60,000 years back, we leave Asia for Europe in another crisis, 40,000 years back, and then we enter the remarkably stable Holocene phase, the only period in the whole history of the planet, that we know of, that can support human development.

And so I was in crisis.

But there were men with better motives, men who saw that times were critical... and wanted a man's part.

It is our sincere hope that the donor community will maintain the high standards so established as it goes about addressing any crisis, humanitarian or otherwise, regardless of its magnitude.

The post crisis era is over, and the post post crisis world is upon us. It is time to adopt a new framework of realistic solutions that promote shared prosperity within the global economy of today and tomorrow.

This is how the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s, the Mexican Tequila crisis of 1994, the Asian debt crisis of 1997, and the Russian crisis of 1998 unfolded. It was also how the financial crisis of 2008 2009 transmitted itself to emerging markets.

We're there in 20 years. We have lots and lots of time to avoid that crisis, and the fiscal cliff was just one more attempt at trying to force the two sides to resolve the crisis.

These countries private sectors have borrowed significantly but, as the Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman has been pointing out, leverage and dollar debt are lower (as a share of national income) than they were at the outset of the 1990 s Asian crisis and at the start of the 1980 s Latin American crisis, for that matter.

We live in difficult and challenging economic times, of course.

His was the age of Ostpolitik and détente, of the first global oil crisis, of economic recession, stagflation, and the return to Europe of mass unemployment. His generation confronted the scourge of domestic terrorism and witnessed revolution in Iran, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the rise of Solidarity in Poland.

Although temporarily alleviated earlier in the year, the financial crisis would no doubt recur the following year without needed management reforms.

That combination helped to promote twin banking and currency crises in that region in the 1990s, which were extremely expensive to resolve in terms of lost output and employment.
