In the framework of the project, training will be provided primarily to trainers and 300 civil servants, and training strategies will be drawn up.

Examples of these new training requirements include training for OIOS auditors in DPKO field missions and training of trainers.

The Centre apos s Training Institute continued to provide short term training courses and, during the period under review, organized and executed 12 training courses in different fields.

A local institute provided training in financial management for the recently established food production unit at Jabal el Hussein centre.

On a familiar theme, the Advisory Committee made a number of observations with regard to the need for the rationalization of training, including training related travel. Once again, it called for more in house training in the region or training through the use of information and communication technology.

Each of the training sessions was preceded by a distance learning course.

The results of a recent survey of training facilities reveal that more staff is trained abroad than within Africa.

There should be disclosure of the types of development and training that directors undergo at induction, as well as the actual training directors received during the reporting period.

The traditional methods are training in specialized centres, training in the workplace, training by mobile teams and distance training, to which computers and technological aids have recently been added.

As of March 2005, the Unit had established a gender component in the civilian staff induction training. It has also carried out liaison with the civilian police and the military training units for the inclusion of a gender component in their respective training activities and in preparation of a train the trainers course.

This training programme is technical vocational training which includes general subjects and which is organized as alternating periods of theoretical training and practical training in enterprises

One of the key elements of the project is the extensive use of so called telesalas special training rooms with television monitors and teaching assistance available at community centres, churches, large factories and prisons.

In addition, 900 gendarmes have followed a four month training programme at the National Gendarmerie School at Ruhengeri and, in mid March 1996, 750 communal police officers completed a four month proficiency course at the Gishari Communal Police training centre.

To date, the project has trained over 200 African civilians from 29 African countries in various subjects including basic courses in peace operations train the trainer workshops and specialized courses for corrections officers, in election observation and on disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.

Although many women work in the latter areas, they are not in supervisory or middle management positions, which is why the statistics show lower participation by women in in house training.

A pool of in house gender trainers has been made available to train new staff in leadership level induction programmes.
