326. The Committee notes with satisfaction the revision of the agrarian reform law giving women the right to inherit land, a reform of particular importance to rural women.

In the agrarian reform census, carried out in 1996, the presence of the percentage of women holder of the land was equivalent 12 .

32. The concentration of economic power that arose from the ownership of land weakened with the introduction of land reform in 1972.

Clearly, farmers should be made secure and protected as part of the agrarian reform programme.

When the first phase of the land reform programme was initiated in 1972 only some 5,000 landowners in a population of 13 million were affected by the ceiling on land ownership.
