The work continues to be based on the interpretation of satellite images, mainly Land Remote Sensing Satellite (LANDSAT) thematic mapper data, to map the present status of land cover and features.

They were being used to produce a global land cover map and to monitor vegetation conditions (greenness) on a periodic basis throughout the year.

The value of the AFRICOVER project is not merely in the usefulness of the maps and databases to be produced the elaboration of such maps will initiate capacity building efforts in Africa through the development of national information systems for the environment and natural resources, crop assessment and food security, land management and large watershed management, preparation of investment field projects and locust and desertification control.

One result of the agreement was a crop specific land cover map of the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations in Montana, delivered in September 1994.

It includes production of the digital database of land cover units over the entire country at a scale of 1 100000.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was currently starting to implement a new project, the Africa Land Cover Map and Digital Geographic Database (AFRICOVER), for production of a digital geographic database and associated thematic map of land use and vegetation cover of the entire African continent.

The project proposal for a Land Cover Map and Digital Database of Africa, which was formulated by FAO and endorsed by the United Nations Inter Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities, has become AFRICOVER and is operational for eastern Africa with support from the Government of Italy.

Satellite data have been utilized in many fields, including agriculture, forestry, land use and land cover mapping, geology, map updating, natural disaster monitoring and environmental studies.

A pilot study on the use of ERS 1 and ERS 2 data for land cover mapping in Africa is in progress.

A pilot study on the use of ERS 1 and ERS 2 data for land cover mapping in Africa was completed in 1996 and a joint report was published.

Almost all the land is covered in natural pastures of low nutritional value.

Indeed, areas formerly covered by fertile soil were now completely barren.

The data from the IRS satellites are being put to use in important applications such as estimating agricultural crop acreage and yield, drought monitoring and assessment, flood mapping, land use and land cover mapping, wasteland management, survey and management of ocean and marine resources and of forest resources, urban planning and mineral prospecting.

The AFRICOVER project represents a total budget of between US 30 million and US 50 million, depending on the options taken.

Web based tools for forest landscape restoration, including the web site of the of the Global Partnership within UNEP WCMC's Forest Restoration Information Service, as well as the Global Forest Information Service, and the Global Land Cover Facility, an institution that develops and distributes remotely sensed satellite data and products concerned with land cover at all scales.

One of these is the project entitled, quot Mount Pinatubo Environmental Degradation Assessment Using ERS 1 SAR Data quot , which produced land cover maps of Mount Pinatubo and vicinity.
