The increase will benefit those who need it most by increasing their gross yearly income by about 624 with the first increase, and an additional 728 with the second.

The increase in the number of visitors has also positively reflected on the revenues in the bookshops in New York and Geneva.

The number of females in the labour force increased from about 27,000 in 1972 to 31,000 in 1979 and about 113,000 in 1990, representing an annual increase of 2.2 per cent over the first period and 12 per cent over the second period.

1. Is an additional international treaty required?

While we recognize the remarkable progress made in expanding the Convention's membership from 87 to 174 States parties since its entry into force in 1997, we are eager to see further expansion as rapidly as possible.

We are pleased to note that the number of States parties to the Convention has increased to 149, evidence of the growing universality of the Convention. We hope to see more States accede to it.

The number of States parties to treaties has tripled over the past decade.

This brought the number of accessions to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons to 45 and the number to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness to 19, as at 31 December 1997.

What does the Convention add, in relation to these other legal instruments?

Noting that the recent expansion of the membership of the Organization, combined with an increase in international treaty making activity, has led to the growth in the volume of work carried out by the Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs of the Secretariat and contributed to the accumulation of unpublished treaties,

It should contribute to mustering the political will to increase the number of States parties to the treaties, and to advance their full implementation.

All Parties also projected an increase in their N2O transport emissions.

During 2004, air arrivals rose by approximately 5 per cent from 2003 levels.

The increase in the number of signatures of the Treaty to 176, and of ratifications to 125, demonstrates the resolve of the wider international community to achieve universalization of the Treaty.
