Women mayors

Among the leaders of local governments there are even fewer women than in the central government 12.8 of city mayors are women (five out of 39 mayors are women) and 13.4 of rural municipality mayors (27 out of 202 rural municipality mayors are women) (in December 2004).

There were too few women mayors.

A similar increase was seen for the posts of governor and mayor.

There were 393 women mayors in 1991 and 529 in 1995.

279. At present, only 9 of the 183 mayors of provincial municipalities are women (4.9 per cent) at the district level in the province of Lima, only 5 of 43 mayors are women (11.6 per cent).

At the end of 2003 there were 85 (out of a total of 435) women Mayors (19.5 ), 5.5 less than the target figure for 2004.

The mayor of Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, is also a woman.

Women could also work in town and municipal councils, mayors' offices, political parties, etc.

Of the 16 heads of oblast and city education offices (departments), half are women.

Women are underrepresented at all levels. One minister (of 12), one permanent secretary, one municipality chief executive officer (of 30) and 31 per cent of Assembly deputies (by compulsory provision in the electoral regulations) are women. No president of a municipal assembly or member of the Presidency of the Kosovo Assembly is a woman.

Until 2000 the number of women councilors at local self government councils was a 5 and 0 women mayors.

Women accounted for 4.4 per cent of parliamentary representatives, while, in the 2004 local elections, women had been elected as mayors in only 18 of a total 3,000 municipalities.

Similarly, instead of three female mayors in a total of 38, there are now only two.

Women were elected to only 14 out of the country's 151 mayoralties (none of which were in the wealthier or more populous municipalities), and 33 women were elected as deputy mayors (which represented an increase compared to the 1996 elections).

The Department, with support from other government bodies, has held a number of seminars and training courses for mayors, town councillors, governors, town clerks, municipal treasurers and community representatives of both sexes.

Following the Spanish municipal elections of May 1995, there are more women councillors and mayors the increase is important as there has been a major step forward in the provincial capitals from one woman mayor (Valencia) to six (Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Málaga, Cadiz and Avila).

In the same year, female candidates to the office of mayor totaled 1,139, with 317 (27.83 ) being elected.

The mayor?

In 2004, 407 women (7.32 of the total) and 5,111 men (91.96 ) were elected to the office of mayor.

At the 2000 local elections, as a result of the activities of women in the Republic of Macedonia, 8.4 women councilors and 2.4 women mayors were elected.

Parliament also approved the election of mayors and their deputies by council members.

After the amendments and supplements to the Law on Local Elections in 2004 (Article 37) 22.7 women councilors and 3.5 women mayors were elected.
