Group discussions and the ensuing general debates provided forums for addressing national and regional practices relevant to the topics under consideration.

The symposium was held on 9 and 10 February 1998, following the completion of debate in the afternoon meetings of the Subcommittee.

The debate also included a lively informal panel debate with outside experts whose views greatly contributed to a deeper understanding of the issues.

More thought should, perhaps, be given to the way in which the discussions and outcomes of these working groups are related to the work of the Sub Commission in plenary so as to ensure that, on the one hand, there is no duplication of the discussions in the working group and those in the Sub Commission and, on the other, that the quality of the debates in the working groups and, in particular, their results are genuinely familiar to and discussed by all the members.

II. General debate and Working Group considerations

20. So does the protracted and inconclusive debate still going on in the sub group on preventive diplomacy of the Open ended Working Group of the General Assembly on a Supplement to An Agenda for Peace.

Building upon the initial work of the five study groups set up to discuss current thinking on ageing and look at options for the future, the debate will move on to 12 citizens juries, giving the general public a chance to debate particular issues over a period of two or three days and come up with recommendations.

Based on the estimation that the Defence case is expected to take as much time as the Prosecution case, the four Defence teams will require 167 trial days for the presentation of their respective cases.

The Group also participated in a Security Council open debate on Haiti in January 2005.
