Education remained the Agency s largest programme.

The core of the Agency apos s basic education programme in Lebanon consisted of the six year elementary and four year preparatory cycles.

The education programme remained the largest single area of activity in the Agency, with 19,152 education staff (including teaching and administrative staff), representing 77 per cent of all Agency staff (24,869), while the programme's regular budget of 188.5 million for 2004 amounted to 53.7 per cent of the Agency's total regular budget.

The Agency also provides secondary level education in the Lebanon field.

The employment of teachers on a contract basis has made a significant contribution to reducing costs in the Agency s largest programme, education.

25.4 The Agency's education subprogramme employs over 16,000 teaching staff and provides general education to some 493,000 refugee children in 660 schools.

Education necessary for teacher's work is acquired at educational establishments, which offer the respective accredited professional and academic study programmes.

It is accepted that the National Institute for Educational Development is currently integrating population and family life education, including sexual education, into the primary and secondary school curriculum.

UNRWA continued to provide in service training for Agency teachers and school supervisors through the UNRWA UNESCO Institute of Education.

With regard to the level of education of the unemployed (table 14.21), the women are better educated than the men, showing particularly good figures in secondary and higher education.

The Adult and Continuing Education Unit of the Department of Education and the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre provide tertiary education in Anguilla.

Public information efforts were aimed at educating Guatemalans about the peace process and the work of the Mission.
