The Coalition Munitions Clearance (CMC) Program represents just one of these elements and is currently destroying ammunition at six depots throughout Iraq.

After this point the munition is then passed into the hands of the military and could conceivably be in storage for 20 years or more before it is used.

The six chemical weapons possessor States continue to destroy their declared stockpiles, which originally exceeded 71,000 metric tons of chemical agents and nearly 9 million munitions and containers.

General Incidents of UXOs may be attributed to a variety of causes such as improper design of the munition and or weapon system, inadequate quality control during manufacturing of the munition, improper storage, effects of the operational environment including terrain, human operational error, et cetera.

Often caches of thousands of munitions were found with individual rounds wrapped in plastic and stored in watertight containers, buried underground and carefully camouflaged to avoid detection.

However, such objects become valid targets under international law when they serve a military purpose, such as being used to store weapons or ammunition.
