Germany s Political Stagnation

The winners and losers are clear, and the political landscape has changed profoundly. The real drama, however, occurred not among the country s main parties but on the boundaries of the political spectrum.

Indeed, because German funds were indispensable in bailing out the eurozone s deeply stressed periphery, the country became central to all efforts to address the crisis.

The Commission on Human Rights has lost prestige because of the political manipulation, selectivity, politicization, double standards, blackmail and hypocrisy of a group of developed countries, whose sole objective is to realize their own political interests.

This view is gaining ground politically as well, with a new, explicitly anti euro party, Alternative for Germany, rising quickly. Moreover, an increasing number of Germans, openly or secretly, want to have the Deutschemark back.

My impression is that German public and political opinion is beginning to recognize the economic devastation for Europe and Germany implied by a euro breakup. German politicians bear the important democratic responsibility of reinforcing this realization and advocating the steps needed to avert a catastrophe.
