That has considerably reduced the Council's legitimacy.

Several regional as well as worldwide meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences have been held.

The Conference reaffirmed the importance of the conclusions of the Ninth Congress.

We recognize the intergovernmental nature of the United Nations and the universal, representative and democratic character of the General Assembly.

While we stress the importance of the revitalization of the General Assembly and the need to re establish its political stature, and call for a stronger role for the Economic and Social Council, we also support the reform and enlargement of the Security Council.

Basically most of us will get turned on at night by the very same things that we will demonstrate against during the day.

It must continue to be empowered and reinvigorated so that it can play a substantive role.

It should be noted that the proposed dates of the high level meeting, 19 and 20 September 2006, would overlap with the general debate of the General Assembly, which will start on 19 September 2006 (see A INF 59 1) in accordance with Assembly resolution 57 301.

The expansion of the CD means that the Conference is now more representative and more global.

27. The General Assembly is the highest political body with universal membership of the Organization.

The Under Secretary General for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Services made an introductory statement.

The Committee invites the General Assembly once again to recognize the importance of its role and to reconfirm its mandate with overwhelming support.

We all agree that the expanded Council should be representative, efficient and transparent.
