There has been an increasing demand for funds during the current mandate period.

The total output of the second mandate (1999 2003) amounts to nine judgements involving fourteen accused. This represents a doubling of the number of accused that were tried, when compared to the first mandate (1995 1999).

The terms of reference (annex II), which are similar to the terms of reference applied to audit reports for the financial periods 1999 to 2004, were also communicated to those firms.

During his short mission to the ISS, European astronaut Andre Kuipers carried out an intensive programme of experiments.

They noted that the examination of the submissions required a series of complex tasks which they had to perform not only during the sessions of the subcommissions but also during the intersessional period.

The evidentiary standards and verification process that were developed during the two previous mandates of the Monitoring Group, which were clearly outlined in the Group's first and second reports, were also used during the current mandate.

A. Financial period

Beginning with AKEBONO in 1989, about 20 mission were approved or planned for the period from 1989 to 1996.

This mandate usually runs for three years, and the current mandate expires in June 2008.
