UNIDO had a strategic role to play in eradicating poverty through sustainable industrial development.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank should be more involved in gender mainstreaming strategies since poverty reduction strategy papers are key development frameworks.

It is encouraging to note that UNCTAD and UNIDO recently strengthened their coordination arrangements in launching, earlier in 1998, a strategic alliance for investment promotion and enterprise development in developing countries.

For example, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will produce a guide on how to design a strategy for developing the national agricultural statistical system and how to integrate that strategy into the system wide national strategy for the development of statistics.

The strategic long term vision statement elaborated by the Director General (GC.11 8 and Add.1) added a new dimension to that role, particularly in so far as it addressed UNIDO's strategic contribution to the Millennium Development Goals.

The leaders appreciate the efforts of the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization in preparing an Arab industrial development strategy.

ESCWA cooperated with the Arab Labour Organization (ALO) to formulate strategies for sustainable human development in the Arab world.

It might be advisable for the strategic long term vision statement to contain a more thorough analysis of the expected future requirements of developing countries and define the future role of UNIDO in responding to the new challenges.
