Mr. Rao (World Intellectual Property Organization) said that his organization had been involved for decades in dealing with issues relating to traditional knowledge, genetic resources and the folklore of indigenous communities.

The Centre has also established policies for the protection of intellectual property rights over its research products, while ensuring the accessibility by developing countries of the same rights.

In 1999 and 2001, WIPO prepared two comprehensive studies focussing on questions arising out of the interface between domain names and intellectual property (IP) rights.

Intellectual property was of increasing importance in the emerging knowledge economy.

Following a request by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the travel arrangements of the beneficiaries of travel grants from the Fund were changed to allow them also to participate in the Roundtable on Intellectual Property and Indigenous Peoples, organized by WIPO on 23 and 24 July 1998. The World Intellectual Property Organization paid for the extra days of stipend for the beneficiaries.
