Increasing disparities in income and access to services

Homelessness and an increase in numbers of street children is one consequence of increasing income disparities.

And as soon as you've got that idea, you should immediately wonder what happens if we widen the differences, or compress them, make the income differences bigger or smaller?

The speed of urban growth, coupled with increasing income disparities, has had a major impact on the structure and functions of social institutions, including education and the family.

In social terms, corruption places a disproportionate burden on the poor and widens income disparity.

Of special concern was the disparity in terms of income between the richest and poorest countries, which was exacerbated by the decline of official development assistance.

Such inequities have created ever greater gaps between the immensely rich and those who have barely enough to survive.

Salary and Earning Gaps

Without action this will continue to deepen.

The income gap between developed and developing countries has widened, and poverty has increased in many developing countries.

Income disparities between and within countries have continued to widen.

The gap in technological capabilities is increasing.

The gap between North and South continued to widen.

While rates of urbanization in advanced economies, including those of Japan, North America and North West Europe, are much slower than elsewhere, there are clear discrepancies in population density, cultural and ethnic inequalities and increasing disparities in income.

The difference is considerable and growing.

Unfortunately, the gulf between the expectations raised by the reforms and the benefits felt by ordinary citizens widened steadily.

The rapid growth of urban areas in all regions of the world, increasing disparities of income and living conditions and the high proportion of children and young people living in conditions of poverty in those urban areas all present major challenges.

That period was, in many people s view, tarnished by greed, with rapid GDP growth accompanied by increasing inequality of income and wellbeing.

Yet, in 2002, women's average income per hour was 36.7 NIS and men's 45.3 NIS, a 23 gap, indicating that the difference cannot be solely attributed to the number of working hours.

A fair proportion of the people do not have access to adequate quantities of food, mainly because of disparities in income.

They also have the potential for widening the gap between rich and poor.

The gap between the developed and developing countries is widening.

The vision statement would help meet the challenge of narrowing the ever wider gap between the developed and developing countries.

Sweden has huge differences in earnings, and it narrows the gap through taxation, general welfare state, generous benefits and so on.

The ever widening gap between North and South and the great disparity between rich and poor had become a major factor that bred new conflicts and wars and undermined regional stability.

Consequently, and despite a further slowdown in the advanced countries during the 1990s, income gaps grew wider and convergence failed to materialize (UNCTAD, 1997 69 101).
