The high unemployment rate among women was a reflection of Latvia's overall unemployment rate, which stood at 10.6 per cent.

At 13.0 per cent the unemployment rate of this age group is on the one hand lower than the overall unemployment rate in the new Länder but on the other hand, it is markedly higher than the relevant rate in the old Länder.

26. Low rate of activity and high unemployment rate.

In 2006, France s unemployment rate was 9.4 , a full percentage point higher than Germany s. By 2008, the French rate can be expected to decline only to 8.2 , while German unemployment is anticipated to fall to 6.3 .

The situation is even worse in rural areas, where the female unemployment rate is 15.34 per cent, considerably more than the rate of 7.94 per cent for men.

The unemployment rate of young men (aged 15 24) was 16.9 in 2003, and the figure for young women was 26 .

The Committee is concerned that unemployment rates remain high, with significant regional disparities.

Also dropping is the level of unemployment among women. If it was 12 in 2001, it was 11.2 in 2002 and 10.4 in 2003.

As for urban unemployment (21.5 per cent), there is only a small margin between the sexes, the figure for women being 20.9 per cent and that for men, 21.8 per cent.

First, joblessness continues to spread. The overall unemployment rate (12 ) has yet to peak, led by an alarming lack of jobs among the young (24 joblessness in the eurozone as a whole, with highs of 59 and 56 in Greece and Spain, respectively).

Table 6 presents trends in the labour force, employment and unemployment, based on the narrow definition of unemployment and the broad definition of unemployment respectively.

The unemployment rate, adjusted to include those who had given up looking for work, stood at 32.6 per cent in the third quarter of 2004.

As of June 1997, the unemployment rate was some 16.5 per cent, with almost 268,000 persons unemployed.
