The work of IPS is organized along two main lines of activity the IPS news agency and IPS projects.

During the visit of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, UNIC Tehran organized a meeting with representatives of Reuters, Kyodo, AFP and the Italian News Agency.

The IPS news agency produces an independent, international news and feature service specialized in reporting global processes and issues of development.

The IPS United Nations bureau in New York produced the Daily Journal, an overnight faxed bulletin of news from IPS of particular interest to United Nations staff and missions.

(b) Rafael Solano, 7 44 years old, director of the independent press agency Habana Press, was arrested several times in 1995 and warned to stop his journalistic activities and not to send information abroad.

Freedom of assembly, speech and the press was non existent and political opposition was strictly prohibited.

That's what you'd call a social news website.

Local press informed that in response to the rise in crime, a number of community forums were held throughout 2004 to address the issue.

C. Outreach Workshop and Press Seminar

It should be opinion driven less news, more views.

That included setting up press briefings and interviews with senior officials, arranging for opinion articles and distributing press materials through United Nations information centres.

Shortly thereafter, that statement was issued to the press through, inter alia, the Xinhua news agency.

D. Obstacles to freedom of expression and freedom of the press

The Department, in cooperation with and with the assistance of the centres at New Delhi and Prague, organized the regional and international seminars mentioned in paragraphs 73 to 75 above.

Reuters alone puts out three and a half million news stories a year.

The Department of Public Information of the Secretariat shall be responsible for the dissemination of information on the seminar, including the issuance of press releases covering meetings of the seminar held in public.

In 2003, as a result of a contract between UN Habitat and the Pan African News Agency, PANAPRESS, to increase coverage of news on urbanization and human settlements, 100 articles were posted on the PANAPRESS website.

Through Associated Press Television News, one of the largest television news agencies, the United Nations is now broadcasting 10 minutes of programming, five days a week, to over 500 Associated Press Television News' subscribers.

There were news!

The objectives of IPS are to strengthen South South and South North flows of information and communication, and to involve in those flows actors representative of the whole of society.

The Tribunal has also facilitated the permanent establishment in Arusha of the media, including three news services and non governmental organizations dealing with communications Fondation Hirondelle, of Switzerland Intermedia, of France and Internews, from the United States of America.
