Being a child, and sort of crawling around the house, I remember these Turkish carpets, and there were these scenes, these battle scenes, these love scenes.

So imagine white guys pasting white papers.

This is called a figure ground illusion.

And one of the most fantastic displays that I remember, or at least visually, was a foraging behavior.

Come back 15 years later.

Never shall I forget the sight.

We were surprised at the sight.

What would they have seen?

Now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to review those two scenes.

So I want to show you another landscape now.

I promise, you'll love it.

This is the view looking at the southeast ridge.

This is a view of what's called the calving face.

Here's a two year record of what that looks like.

You'll see scenes like this all over the island.

We need to imagine what a landscape of the world's fears might look like.

Suddenly, here we are.

A mother and a cub, such a beautiful sight.

Seeing this scene, I couldn t help but sigh.

Think about going shopping and think about the possibilities of a compassionate consumerism.

Suffice to say it's like it's not the prettiest picture of sustainable farming.

And this is the scene that greeted me when I landed there.

And this was a pretty common sight.

So again this is what they can see under the microscope.

This is the view you would get, if you looked down on that.

Sort of an overview of Rome and the plan that you might see from a dirigible.

Here we have a scene that you would find in any operating room across the U.S. or any other developed country.

It was like your romantic vision of Europe.

See this line, this is a landscape for violent video games.

And as we got closer, its significance became apparent.

In the present period, people still remember, and very intensely, the consequences of war destruction, especially in the countryside.

So you see it that way.

Now this is a terrible illustration of being hit by a soccer ball.

We've been surrounded by images of space our whole lives, from the speculative images of science fiction to the inspirational visions of artists to the increasingly beautiful pictures made possible by complex technologies.

Images of the earth being wiped out by flood or bird flu 64 percent.

And this is like 10 weeks later, demolished by hand.

As you go around these places there's plenty of aesthetics.

These are extraordinary landscapes, but few of us ever get to see them.

Imagine now taking an astrophysically realistic situation imagine two black holes that have lived a long life together.

The pitiful sight moved us to tears.

And I didn't know exactly why I had it, but it was so vivid.

If they'd sent a nuke, it would have been rather more spectacular than what actually happened last Monday.

So what are the oceans going to be like in 20 or 50 years?

And I was struck by the juxtaposition of these two enormous disciplines that humanity has.
