The single most significant outcome of the Sharm el Sheikh summit was the announcement by Prime Minister Sharon and President Abbas of a halt to violence and military operations.

President Abbas condemned the killings and accused Israel of undermining the Sharm el Sheikh understandings.

The understandings previously reached at Sharm el Sheikh were an encouraging beginning for a return to the negotiating table and for calming conditions on the ground.

The electoral season should not be allowed to prevent the parties from engaging in the essential work of building mutual trust and following through with the implementation of the Sharm el Sheikh understandings.

There were some hopes for improvement in the Palestinian situation in the aftermath of the Sharm El Sheikh Summit and the announcement of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
