Diseases of the cardiovascular system, such as coronary diseases and hypertension, were in first place with 50 per cent of the leading causes of death and lost years due to disability (DALY) in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1991.

The leading diseases in 2001 are circulatory diseases, with a structural index of 26.2 per cent, diseases of the respiratory system, 18.3 per cent and bone and muscular diseases, 9 per cent, etc.
