Marine living resources

Non living marine resources include beach and nearshore minerals, deep sea minerals, offshore oil and gas, and chemicals and freshwater from the sea. Deep sea minerals

Marine litter comes from both sea based sources and land based sources and it is obvious that measures to reduce or prevent it in the marine and coastal environment have to be taken in many communities, as part of a large number of activities over a wide range of societal sectors, and by many individuals in many different circumstances.

B. Non living marine resources

Next year will be an important one for the oceans and the law of the sea, in particular with the launching of a process to establish a global international legal framework governing biological resources in sea areas beyond national jurisdictions.

Since the adoption of resolution 57 141, there has been a concerted effort to widen the scope of GMA from its main objective, namely, to combat marine pollution and prevent the physical degradation of the marine environment, to include living marine resources.

Enhanced marine scientific research is critical for sustainable exploration and exploitation of marine resources.
