III Regional Seas Programmes

There are emerging technologies throughout the field around oceanography, which we will incorporate into oceanography, and through that convergence, we will transform oceanography into something even more magical.

Overview of activities of regional seas programmes on marine litter

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea has already adjudicated a number of disputes in this field.

UNEP and its Regional Seas Programme and the Global Programme of Action have been developing and implementing a number of activities on the management of marine litter.

We emphasize the need for continued support for capacity building in order to effectively implement the Convention and all associated programmes in the area of oceans and the law of the sea.

Those programmes include the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Management and Utilization of Marine Mammals, the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land based Activities and the Regional Seas Programme.

The UNEP Regional Seas Programme, covering 17 regions around the world and more than 140 coastal States and territories, provides a framework for regional agreements and conventions and their related action plans to protect the coastal and marine environment.
