The commercial fishers comprise about 300 boats, with 50 per cent of the fishers owning their fishing gear and the remainder acting as helpers or employees of the gear owners.

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries Report issued in 2004, the two main types of fisheries in the Territory are small scale (commercial) and recreational fisheries.

The consequence of that is that all those nutrients that fuel the great anchoveta fisheries, of the sardines of California or in Peru or whatever, those slow down and those fisheries collapse.

One delegation suggested the establishment of inventories of net types and other gear used in fishing within national jurisdictions or a clearing house mechanism to facilitate the sharing of information on fishing net types and other gear used in fisheries around the world.

It is estimated that more swordfish is caught by tuna longlines in the Pacific than longlines targeting swordfish and that such bycatch amounts to about 25 percent of the global catch.

Industrial longline fishing also threatens the jobs, and in some cases the nutritional subsistence, of artisanal, subsistence and other small scale fishers, who represent 90 percent of the world's fishermen and women, and who are responsible for almost 50 percent of total world landings.

Unfortunately, NOAA Fisheries has agreed relax their new rules in response to comments by the very longline fishermen who participated in the study of the techniques in the Atlantic that led to the reopening.

The Chinese delegation believes that when considering fishery issues, the international community should aim at regulating conduct and achieving sustainable development.
