To address the problem of opium poppy cultivation, a demonstration alternative development project has been launched in the major opium producing area.

This is a field of poppies in Afghanistan.

According to provisional figures from a government survey on the poppy crop in the Dir district and other poppy growing areas of the North West Frontier Province, the level of opium poppy cultivation in the growing season 1995 96 decreased by about 75 per cent compared with that in the growing season 1994 95.

Preliminary results of the 1997 opium poppy survey carried out by the Government of Pakistan indicate that an area of 345 hectares was under opium poppy cultivation in 1997.

In recent years, Egypt has been affected by a rise in the cultivation of opium poppy in the region of south Sinai, where approximately 30 tonnes of opium poppy were seized and destroyed by the Egyptian authorities in 1996.

Poppy cultivators who willingly submitted poppy seed to the authorities were given support for alternative cash crops under the New Destiny Project launched in April 2002.

Myanmar, with an estimated 154,000 hectares, and Afghanistan, with some 54,000 hectares, according to the 1996 UNDCP opium poppy survey, remain the two countries in which the largest amount of cultivation takes place.

Opium poppy cultivation will remain subject to eradication, and ineligible for alternative development.

The latter met with resistance from poppy growers in some areas, resulting in casualties on both sides.
