V Environmental situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

UNEP has assisted seven countries in making their reports on the status of the environment available on the World Wide Web.

UNEP has assisted Bahrain, Jordan and Yemen in developing frameworks for national state of the environment reports.

Report on the state of the environment

The present report contains a summary of the state of the environment, responding to various decisions of the Governing Council Global Ministerial Environment Forum and relating to UNEP activities in environmental assessment and early warning.

Improved environmental conditions led to an improved quality of life for the population.

The report will review the environmental situation in the five countries in the Central Asia subregion.

Countries that had not replied to the questionnaire were requested to do so urgently.

The reports of the four subregions were targeted to be completed by December 1995.

The land cover classification for North America is being used by the North America Commission on Environmental Cooperation for continental reporting on the state of the environment.

The report is being submitted to the Governing Council Global Ministerial Environment Forum at its ninth special session to update the Council Forum on current developments in the global environmental situation and on the various activities and processes being undertaken to keep the state of the global environment under review and to facilitate informed discussion and action.

Member States should pool their efforts to tackle problems of environmental degradation, shortages of water resources and drinking water and the deterioration of environmental conditions in cities and industrial zones.

53. The number and scale of environmental emergencies in different parts of the world are rising at an alarming rate.

Urges UNEP to update its report on the environmental situation in Occupied Palestinian Territories and submit it to the GC for immediate reaction.

The role of the Commission on Sustainable Development should likewise be examined, as should its relations with other organizations in the United Nations system which also carried out activities in the field of the environment and development.
