The Armillaria is actually a predatory fungus, killing certain species of trees in the forest.

Consider the fungi including mushrooms, rusts, molds and many disease causing organisms.

These extremophiles tell us that life may exist in many other environments.

So this strategy has served it pretty well it's 2,400 years old.

But again, these are done in these primordial conditions, really messy conditions, not sort of sterile laboratory conditions.

And along comes pneumococcus or another bacteria, streptococcus and boom, they get a bacterial pneumonia.

This is a really odd one. This is Ferroplasma.

Mice reared in a sterile environment so they lacked a gut microbiome and do not develop this kind of immune cell were given L. reuteri and the immune cells arose.

These vibrios, these bacteria, can actually infect people.

I want to present to you a suite of six mycological solutions, using fungi, and these solutions are based on mycelium.

And we know staph can do amazing things.

Fungi don't like to rot from bacteria, and so our best antibiotics come from fungi.

Those fungi and bacteria are as highly evolved as humans.

The pH of 11, and yet it had chemosynthetic bacteria living in it and at this extreme environment.

So I'm not sure if there are any in this photo, but I do know the fungus is down there.

I actually chased the mycelium, when it stopped producing spores.

Dr Noah's bacillus? Now, Jimmy, even you wouldn't release germ warfare.

And if the title Searching for Armillaria Death Rings, sounds ominous, it is.

So, if all goes well, they're going to have designer bugs in warm vats that are eating and digesting sugars to excrete better biofuels.

A crank start?

And this is produced by bacteria who are actually making more sulfuric acid, and living at pHs right around zero.

And the focus when I'm talking about the diarrheal organisms, as well as the focus when I'm talking about any organisms that cause acute infectious disease, is to think about the problem from a germ's point of view, germ's eye view.

So, fungi and mycelium sequester carbon dioxide in the form of calcium oxalates.

The mycelium absorbs the oil.

And so, as I was thinking about this, I focused on this organism, which is the El Tor biotype of the organism called Vibrio cholerae.

I became interested in entomopathogenic fungi fungi that kill insects.

And what you're looking at with this namibiensis is the biggest bacteria we've ever seen.

A virus grabbed onto a bacterium and it slipped its DNA into it.

So many such that it's now just a home for bacteria who really like acidic, toxic conditions.

And the way bacteria make a living is that they consume nutrients from the environment, they grow to twice their size, they cut themselves down in the middle, and one cell becomes two, and so on and so on.

Those organisms that paired with fungi were rewarded, because fungi do not need light.

The worst possibility is that a very simple germ, like staph, for which we have one antibiotic that still works, mutates.

You don't have to heat them up as hot as you would something you do pressure canning because bacterial spores can't grow in the acid.

The mushrooms then are harvested, but very importantly, the mycelium has converted the cellulose into fungal sugars.

The clue to this came from another marine bacterium, and it's a bacterium called Vibrio fischeri.

We share in common the same pathogens.

The seeds then are mothered by this mycelium.
