And it's just amazing, walk in the elevator and there's lights on in the elevator.

The elevator's out again.

Everybody who wants to go to the 10th floor goes into car two, and everybody who wants to go to the third floor goes into car five.

The elevator seems to be out of order.

I took the elevator to the third floor.

It's the lift, it's a series of buttons in the lift.

And another man looked in my direction and said, Yes, there he is. He's on this elevator with us.

I smell smoke in the elevator.

Like the things that people use.

You feel it most when you're in a sealed metal box, a new style elevator they're called destination control elevators.

Then you come up in this glass elevator right near the curtain wall.

You have a series of buttons. You actually choose your lift music.

And the elevator door opened, and they all walked out.

They are accessed through this diagonal elevator.

The elevators in a skyscraper are vital systems.

I happened to be in the elevator collecting data for this book.

And they're going up these giant escalators on their way to their jobs.

This elevator's about the size of a New York City studio apartment.

It's because the elevator is missing some important instrumentation, like the buttons.

But, in this case, three doctors walk into an elevator.

I had to make a transfer at the 53rd St. stop where there are these two giant escalators.

The next day I left for Rwanda, and it was like taking the express elevator to hell.

But some years ago I was on an elevator in Philadelphia, coming down.

So none of this mishegas of letting everybody go into whatever car they want.

One of them also being, although logically it's quite a good idea to have a lift with no up and down button in it, if it only serves two floors, it's actually bloody terrifying, okay?

Similarly, this is from a hotel in Stockholm, the Lydmar.

And on that elevator a man said, I hear Billy Graham is staying in this hotel.

These are the ones where you have to press what floor you're going to go to before you get in the elevator.

You can see, this is the generator. It's a crank generator.

I was walking from the elevator over here, and even just looking at the stage right now so there's probably 20 500 watt lights right now.

For example, the elevators in this building most likely are controlled by one of these.

Two types of identifier have been supplied a) Without integral printer, network powered b) With integral printer, battery and or network powered.

The cab stopped, and I pulled my body from it feeling each ounce of weight as I walked to the elevator.

Diesel driven generators provide 240 volt electric power for approximately four hours each evening and for two hours each morning.

Because we're using escalators to move people, all of these trusses are picking up diagonal loads.

And each of these generators is selling electricity to 20 houses each.

For instance the courses offered by the National Training Bureau, a body engaged in vocational training, are draughtsman, electrician, auto mechanic, machinist, welding, auto electrician, radio TV mechanic, home appliances repair, industrial electronics, office automation, e commerce, auto CAD, graphic designing.

And in this community, we didn't have a television we didn't have computers, obviously, radio.

My guess is that the cost of installing this in the lift in the Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm is probably 500 to 1,000 pounds max.

Turn off the TV.

The television doesn't work.

My computer has frozen.

There is no electricity except for that provided by a locally built water mill generator.

Is there a telephone anywhere?
