The WIPO Digital Agenda was launched in September 1999 by the Director General of WIPO at the WIPO International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Intellectual Property.

A presentation on intellectual property and traditional knowledge by WIPO considered different objectives for the use of, and forms of protection for, traditional knowledge.

A commodity price stabilization mechanism should be established and a review, by both WTO and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), of the development dimension of the global intellectual property regime was needed.

At the heart of the UNFPA knowledge sharing strategy are knowledge assets, used to capture, synthesize and share experiential knowledge within the organization.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organized training seminars on intellectual property rights for women entrepreneurs and invited experts in the field to speak at events for women entrepreneurs and inventors.

Following a request by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the travel arrangements of the beneficiaries of travel grants from the Fund were changed to allow them also to participate in the Roundtable on Intellectual Property and Indigenous Peoples, organized by WIPO on 23 and 24 July 1998. The World Intellectual Property Organization paid for the extra days of stipend for the beneficiaries.

An observer for WIPO reported on the future direction of the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC).

The World Intellectual Property Organization has an ongoing programme addressing traditional knowledge and genetic resources.

In the work of WIPO, particular focus should be given to defensive protection of indigenous traditional knowledge aimed at preventing unauthorized obtention of intellectual property rights over its use.

66. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) OAU Gold Medal Award ceremony took place during the OAU summit in Harare in June 1997.

The Chief of the Science and Technology Section of OAU was invited by WIPO to participate in a training course that was organized by the WIPO Academy (Geneva, June 1998).

In 2000 the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) had established an Intergovernmental Committee with a mandate to discuss intellectual property issues arising from access to genetic resources and benefit sharing, and the protection of traditional knowledge and folklore.

As to intellectual property, it was stated that there was less need for work in that area, the issues were extremely complex and any efforts to address them should be coordinated with other organizations, such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

WIPO continued to address points of the WIPO Digital Agenda, a program aimed at formulating appropriate responses to the influence of the Internet and digital technologies on IP systems and in particular ensuring the protection of IP on the Internet.
