Here's an interesting one for the IT world bio silicon. This is a diatom, which is made of silicates.

The object on the right is made from a confection of different substances, from silicon and metal and plastic and so on.

The way that silicon behaves, the fact that you can build transistors, is a purely quantum phenomenon.
