Space debris flux and meteoroid influx are essential for validation of space debris environmental models.

For model validation this information can be compared with results from space debris environmental models.

Comparison of the Russian modelling results with the data obtained using existing mathematical models of the space debris situation in circumterrestrial space, i.e. ORDEM 96 (NASA) and MASTER (ESA), has indicated substantial discrepancies (by a factor of four to five times or more) in various areas, a matter which will require further joint investigation.

So here what we're trying to do is we bring the picture and project it into the 3 D model space.

Space debris models make use of available data sources.

Aspects to be addressed are an analysis of fragmentation models short and long term evolution of the space debris population and comparison of models.

The IODMS is a dedicated monitoring model for man made space debris, but it takes into account the natural space debris information (figure I).

At certain space settings, it does an ok job of modeling exponential growth and kind of a rounding off to a carrying capacity.

IFR TUBS also carried out the development of the release version of the ESA space debris model MASTER, which now includes an option for the evaluation of natural meteoroid flux.

And that's exactly what happened when Daina Taimina in 1997, showed that you could crochet models in hyperbolic space.

There has now been developed in Russia a sophisticated mathematical model of circumterrestrial space pollution.

Results of these analyses would be used to validate the present reference flux models for small size meteoroids and space debris.

First of all the initial population gt 1 cm has been taken from the ESA MASTER Model (Epoch 1995.0), which is an up to date analysis tool.

The role of space debris modelling has changed and been extended significantly within the last years.

The work on the ESA MASTER Space Debris Model has been finished at IfRR.

During a joint working meeting between ESA ESOC, the Technical University of Braunschweig, eta_max space GmbH and FGAN, it was concluded that a suitable extension of MASTER to deal with this problem has to be developed in cooperation with model and sensor experts.

Different modelling and simulation tools are available to predict the damage resulting from impacts on various shield designs (e.g. the NASA BUMPER model, the ESA ESABASE model, the Russian BUFFER model and several hydrocodes to perform simulations under conditions not possible using ground based test facilities).

The participants also commented that the time allocated for the training on models was not adequate and that some models were not well demonstrated, especially those on the health sector.

In order for debris measurement data to be useful for the validation of ESA s MASTER model, discussions have been started for the definition and implementation of a unique interface between models and measurements.
