The first limitation of breast cancer screening is obvious where effective diagnosis and treatment are not available, screening cannot have any impact. But there is more to the issue namely, whether screening ultimately fulfills its intended purpose of reducing breast cancer mortality rates.

Screening entails the mass testing of individuals of a certain age and gender, regardless of family history or personal health, to identify a potential disease state. For screening to be useful, the test or procedure must readily identify the disease in question, and the subsequent treatment must result in some measurable benefit.

Care for pregnant women includes the offer of standard screening of all women for conditions including the infectious diseases hepatitis B and syphilis, and since January 2004 also for HIV.

In 1998, screening for the prostate specific antigen began.

Candidates were vetted in a procedure that included thorough background investigations.

In 2003 2004, Alberta established a Mobile Diabetes Screening Initiative, which provides mobile screening for diabetes and related complications in off reserve and remote Aboriginal communities.

Ms. Luddy (Ireland) said it was hoped that the national breast screening programme would be launched in 2007 it would be free of charge to the target 50 65 age group.

Yet many refuse to give up screening. Given this, an active surveillance program could be the best way to address the most serious consequence of excessive screening premature, overly aggressive treatment.

Saudi Arabia claims losses in respect of these resources.

Understanding screening s limitations requires, first and foremost, an understanding of the process. A mammogram (x ray of the breast) is administered to ostensibly healthy people to detect unsuspected disease.

Active surveillance programs are an encouraging prospect for minimizing the negative consequences of PSA testing. But, without vastly improved screening practices, prostate cancer screening is unlikely to help and can even do serious harm.

There is some evidence of relatively low participation in routine breast cancer screening among women of Turkish and Moroccan origin and of relatively low participation in routine cervical cancer screening among women of Moroccan and Antillean origin.

The second, the Canadian National Breast Screening Study, which began in the 1980s, also used annual mammograms and breast examinations for the screened group. But, in the control group, women aged 50 59 also received annual clinical breast examinations, and women aged 40 49 were given a single breast examination.

It is anticipated that the provincial screening tool will be useful in identifying trends in incidence of alcohol use during pregnancy.

The Government continues to support initiatives to increase access and participation in cervical screening.

There have been several attempts to evaluate, through observational studies, the impact of screening in the general population. But such studies, which are based on comparisons between uncontrolled groups, tend to produce biased results.
