Let me very briefly tell you what I mean by this, synthesizing the work of many economic historians in the process.

Economists working on the border of economics and psychology, for example, argued that behavioral finance, in which human foibles are brought to bear to explain the failure of the so called efficient markets hypothesis, would be given more prominence. Economic historians, meanwhile, argued that future textbooks would embed analysis of recent experience in the longer term historical record.

Sperling is fundamentally different from the typical academic economist, who tends to concentrate on advancing economic theory and statistics. He concentrates on legislation that is, practical things that might be accomplished to lift the economy.

Now, a bit of economic history, I think, may be helpful here.

But then, again, sometimes economists get it wrong.

There is no market for cars, say the economists.

Economics should not be divorced from psychology, politics, history, philosophy, and so on. Students are especially keen to study issues like inequality, the role of ethics and fairness in economics (as opposed to the prevailing focus on profit maximization), and the economic consequences of climate change.

But I believe that corruption is not the main reason that the profession missed the crisis. Most economists have very little interaction with the corporate world, and these unbiased economists were no better at forecasting the crisis.

I'm a historian.

An economist would never do that.
